３． 相関接続詞
not only A, but also B
= not only A,B as well

I have not only a cat, but also a dog. = I have not only a cat, a dog as well
= I don’t have only a cat, but also a dog. = I don’t have only a cat, a dog as well

When I go to the library, I don’t only read books, but also prepare for the term tests.
= When I go to the library, I don’t only read books, prepare for the term tests as well.

Mary is as beautiful as Jenny.
= Mary is no less beautiful than Jenny.(美人姉妹の法則？)
メアリーはジェニーに劣らず美人です。

Whales are no more fish than horses. (鯨の法則)
馬(が魚でないの)と同様に、鯨は魚ではありません。

４． 接続詞と前置詞

although / though (しかしながら)接続詞
despite / in spite of(〜にもかかわらず)前置詞

because 接続詞
because of 前置詞

while 接続詞
during 前置詞

and 接続詞
(besides/moreover)　副詞「その上に」

but 接続詞
however 副詞

because 接続詞
therefore 副詞

例えば、どちらの文が原因を述べているのか、どちらの文が結果を述べているのかを判断しなければならない場合、こんな接続詞を選ぶ問題は「読まないと解けない問題」である。時間がかかる。
ただし、上記のように接続詞か前置詞、接続詞か副詞の選択であれば、1秒で解ける。

５． That　接続詞(文と文をつなげる働き)

　SV—that S’V’---
That 接続詞には品詞がある(①名詞節、②形容詞節、③副詞節)
① 名詞節(主語や目的語になる that S’V’(O’)---)

that以下の文は完成している
S’がV’することは(主語)
That students do homework everyday is very important
It is very important that students do homework everyday.
1) It is 形容詞 that S’ V’ ---
2) It V (O) that S’ V’ ---.
上の2)のような形の一般動詞は見つかるのか？
S’ V’ ---という節が人でないので「動作しない」「動かない」
It made me happy that my son was born last month.

S’がV’することを(目的語)
動詞および述語が目的語をとる場合、後ろに名詞ではなく、さらに主語と述語があれば後ろの分は名詞節です。
SV that S’V’(O’)
Vが目的語「〜を」を取る（第一条件）
I hope that my wife is so kind.
*接続詞の前の動詞を見なければならない。
*名詞節では接続詞の後ろの文は完成している。

② 形容詞節(親分「名詞」の子分、親分が存在する)

関係代名詞(S'がV’する人・もの)
名詞 that S’ V’ ---(このときthat節の中は分が完成していない)
V’は目的語を取る動詞
This is the book that I bought yesterday.
boughtは目的語とるので文が完成していない。
The earthquake that happened at noon was so big.
このthatは省略できない。

③ 副詞節
形容詞 that S’ V’(O’)---(文が完成している)
I am sorry that I broke the window.
I am so sorry that I broke the window.

副詞 that S’ V’ ---(文が完成している)
He ran fast that the bud guys followed him.
He ran so fast that the bad guys followed him.
*接続詞の後ろの文は完成している。
④その他のthat
指示代名詞のthat I understand that.
指示形容詞のthat That pen is so good
